“Essentially, Jillian helped me cure myself of Lupus. Yep, that’s right. She helped me cure myself of Lupus.  I’ve had nutrition and health practitioners in my life since I was 18, as I had an infection that resulted in my gallbladder being removed and my family doctor  recommended I work with a dietitian to help my body acclimate to its “reserve emulsifier” being gone. A year later, I was diagnosed with Lupus SLE and was immediately put on a steroid. Even with a dietitian, there was no discussion about food and herbs, and how those could work as medicine for my body. How some foods would exacerbate the inflammation by was already fighting. There was just a suggestion to stay away from “overly fatty foods” because my body had to work extra hard without the gallbladder and I would be more susceptible to issues because of the Lupus. So, for the next 10+ years I yo-yo-ed in pain, weight, and even more dangerous–my commitment to my own health, which was largely due to just not knowing what to do and having too many competing opinions from the doctors in my hometown and here in the city. On a serendipitous day, I met Jillian at the gym. We talked, we scheduled a meeting, and then we met.  During the first meeting (and just before) she collected a lot of information from me about my medical history. As soon as she started talking during our first session I knew she was different. She didn’t approach anything with judgement or absolutes. It was all about finding a balance–one that worked well for my body, while still allowing me to enjoy foods that gave me comfort. Over the course of a year we worked together and while I did lose weight during that time, the most significant result was that for the first time in 10 years I tested ANA negative with my labs. What that means is that my Lupus was essentially in remission and undetectable. That was huge. And what’s more, I started having a better understanding of food, my relationship to it, how it can heal, how it’s not a vice, or a bad thing to enjoy. Food is ones understanding in it offers a lot of freedom and Jillian helped to unlock it for me.”
